LIETZENSEEGOLF – A SHORT HISTORY

It all started with a four-iron...
Back around 2010, our main judge, Johannes, was gifted a golf club and some balls. None of us knew what to do with them. Green fees? Not in our budget. And honestly, not our vibe. So, Johannes Handrock, Amos Douglas, and I took our new gear to the local park and started swinging.

It didn’t take long to realize that regular golf balls and a public park full of joggers, dogs, and kids don’t mix. So we switched to foam practice balls—the same ones we use today—and gave it another go. What started as a casual outing became a regular thing. Friends joined in. Before we knew it, we were hosting tournaments. Lietzenseegolf was born.

In 2021, we lost Amos unexpectedly. Since then, our tournaments have also become a way to honor the good times we had with him. Now, we play once a month from early spring to autumn. Tournament announcements go up on Instagram and spread through word of mouth.

How We Play?
On game day, the judges scout the park and decide on holes. We never dig into the ground—just use what’s already there: man-made, dog-dug, or naturally formed. Like other offgolf styles, we also use objects as targets. But we don’t plan everything in advance. Just like a DJ shouldn’t pre-select their whole set, we let the game evolve based on the players, the park, and the vibe that day.

Turnout varies—usually 12-20 players, but on special occasions, we get up to 50. Groups max out at five players, each with a judge who counts shots and settles disputes. Judges also play and are judged by a group member. As we move through the park, the back-and-forth is a mix of encouragement and trash talk.

After the first three holes, we reshuffle: top players move into winner groups, the rest into loser groups. Then we play a set number of holes, adjusting for time and conditions.

At the end, prizes go to the top three in the winners’ group, the top three in the losers’ group, and—most importantly—last place. Skill matters, but Lietzenseegolf is about community first.

The Rules
• Only four-irons allowed.
• You have six shots to hit the target. If you miss, it’s marked as seven.
• Hole-in-ones are -3 points.
• You can clear anything behind the ball, but what’s in front stays.
• Once per round, you can use the back of your club to "spoon" the ball (counts as a shot).
• Once per round, you can blow the ball with one continuous breath (doesn’t count as a shot).
• Judges are bribeable for €20+. Nobody’s tested this, but the judges love to remind people.

Join the Fun
We play on Saturdays at 12:00, and it’s free to join. Just bring what you want to eat and drink. We also collect donations for ASET, a charity supporting education in the Global South. Our tournaments build community in Berlin—helping fight the loneliness epidemic—while also supporting communities elsewhere.

The “Blow Rule” bring something new to the offgolf game.

Our biggest event of the year is the World Cup every June. Expect a big turnout, wild shots, and hilarious live commentary from our friend Matt. If you want to check us out, that’s the one to hit.

Looking forward to seeing new faces soon,
Jasper Whitlow
